Dodgers Rumors: Writer Thinks LA Should Trade Max Muncy, Prospect for All-Star Infielder
The middle of the Dodgers infield could use some help. Miguel Rojas and Chris Taylor are the only two shortstops, and they've struggled at the plate to start the 2023 season.
Rojas is slashing .182/.250/.227 in 22 at-bats with one double, two walks and four strikeouts. Taylor has, somehow, been even worse, slashing .091/.162/.273 in 33 at-bats with two home runs, five RBIs, three walks and 15 strikeouts.
Over at second base, Miguel Vargas is transitioning to a new position. Defensively, he's been okay and, offensively, he's been exceptional at taking walks, but hasn't been great at putting the ball in play. Vargas has an incredible on-base percentage of .473, however, he has just five hits in 25 at-bats.
Vargas is the one I'm less worried about, but Rojas and Taylor are quite the concern on the offensive side of things. That's why, the Dodgers could be in the market for a new middle infielder. And if they are, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report has just the guy and just the trade in mind. He thinks the Dodgers should trade for All-Star infielder Gleyber Torres from the New York Yankees in exchange for All-Star third baseman Max Muncy and RHP Landon Knack. Here's a part of what he had to say:
"Keeping in mind that the Dodgers presumably plan on making a big offseason (or trade deadline) swing for Shohei Ohtani, they likely want any incoming money to be offset by outgoing money. Moving Muncy ($13.5 million this year; $10 million club option in 2024) solves that problem. And trading for Muncy would allow the Yankees to move LeMahieu back to second base instead of keeping him at the hot corner during the stretches of the season when 37-year-old Josh Donaldson is unavailable/ineffective."
Trading Muncy after his four home runs and 11 RBIs in San Francisco would definitely get fans riled up, and wouldn't exactly help the infield mix considering he's the team's starting third baseman. However, there is something to be said about trading the 32-year-old not great defensive third baseman, and bringing back a 26-year-old middle infielder with one more year of team control.
Muncy's power would definitely tempt the Yankees, and the 25-year-old former second-round pick in Knack would be the sweetener. He's currently the Dodgers No. 19 prospect per MLB Pipeline.
As for Torres, he's off to an impressive start this season, slashing .333/.480/.590 with two home runs, six RBIs, two doubles, one triple, 11 walks and six strikeouts. He also can play both second base and shortstop, although he's played more at second over the past few seasons.
If Torres came to LA and Muncy was traded, I assume Vargas would go back to his original position of third base, and Torres would slide in at second, while providing depth at shortstop if Rojas and Taylor continue to struggle.
It's definitely an interesting proposition, although I don't see it happening. But trade proposals are always fun to break down, so shoutout Miller for coming up with this one.
