The body of the 2023 MLB season is still warm and the Dodgers have already re-signed one of their most prolific hitters.

Max Muncy had a club option worth $14MM entering this free agency that was all but sure to be picked up by the club. Earlier today, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic announced that the Dodgers would actually be giving third baseman Muncy a two-year extension instead.

Per the Los Angeles Dodgers, Muncy agreed to a two-year $24MM extension with a $10MM club option for 2026.

Instant Reaction

This deal appears to be a win for both sides. The lefty-power bat gets more years and more guaranteed money on his contract. The Dodgers retain one of their most productive hitters, and they lower his AAV moving forward.

Max Muncy earned every bit of this extension. After struggling in 2022, by his standards, he had a resurgent 2023. He tied his career high in home runs (36) and hit a career-high 105 RBI.

A fan favorite, Muncy gets to stay in LA a bit longer and continue to hit nukes out of the Ravine.

What Position Will Max Muncy Play Moving Forward?

The 2023 campaign was his first as a full-time third baseman. Overall, it was a solid if unspectacular year on defense for the veteran. If the position ends up as his long-term home is dependent on how the Dodgers attack this offseason.

Three-time Gold Glove award winning third baseman Matt Chapman is a free agent and has been linked to LA. Rumors involving potential trade scenarios involving the Dodgers and Cardinals for Nolan Arenado continue to pop up in the background.

Muncy has offered LA some defensive versatility in the past playing second base and Gold Glove caliber first base. With Freddie Freeman entrenched at first, another season at third base or a shift to second could be in the future for Muncy.
