MLB Writer Predicts Dodgers Have 4 All-Stars, But Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts Miss Out
The Los Angeles Dodgers are heating up. After hovering at or around .500 for the first 26 games of the season, the team exploded on their recent homestand, going 6-0, and outscoring the Cardinals and Phillies by a combined 50-17.
The homestand sweep was capped off by a Max Muncy grand slam, continuing his massive comeback season as the cleanup hitter of this team.
Muncy currently leads the MLB in home runs with 12, and is tied for fourth in RBIs with 27. His 1.039 OPS is tied for third in the majors, while his .631 slugging percentage also leads the entire MLB.
Muncy is one of four Dodgers that Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report thinks will make the All-Star team this season. Muncy is also the only one who he expects to start.
Joining Muncy from the Dodgers, according to Reuter, would be Will Smith, James Outman and Clayton Kershaw. Notably, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts were left off his team.
If Smith were to make the All-Star team — and there’s no reason he shouldn’t — it would be his first time receiving the honor. He was one of the biggest snubs over the last two seasons, but this does finally feel like the year he gets the recognition he deserves.
As for Outman, making the All-Star team would be an incredible honor. Although he’s been slumping as of late, he’s still one of the best rookies in baseball, and put up All-Star-caliber numbers in April on his way to winning the National League Rookie of the Month Award. Another month like that for Outman would definitely put him in consideration for the All-Star game.
Finally, Reuter predicts Kershaw makes the team for the 10th time in his career. And as of now, he probably has a case to be the starter for the second consecutive season.
Kershaw is coming off a National League Pitcher of the Month Award, and has looked as dominant and healthy as ever. If he can continue to pitch at or near this level and stays healthy, he’ll 100 percent be a part of the All-Star festivities yet again.
As for Betts and Freeman, they’re off to hot starts in May. While they may not be deserving right now — although a case can be made for Freeman — I expect both of them to be on the All-Star team come the middle of the season.
For yet another year, the All-Star game will likely be loaded with Dodgers. But we have a long way to go before we have to start thinking about that.
