Shohei Ohtani's Status For Dodgers Spring Training Opener Revealed
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed to the media on Sunday that Shohei Ohtani will not be in the lineup for the Cactus League opener against the San Diego Padres on Thursday.
"Shortly thereafter I see him playing with us," added Roberts.
The Dodgers are letting Ohtani determine the pace of workouts. They have taken the same approach with other injured veterans, including Clayton Kershaw in the past.
Ohtani said he expects to take live batting practice for the first time next week. The Dodgers have been letting the slugger determine the pace of his workouts.“He’s healthy. We’re just giving him the opportunity that if he wants to be out there and take live batting practice, great and if he chooses not to and just works in the cage, that’s fine too. But his health, everything is fantastic.”

Ohtani was listed among the hitters scheduled for live hitting for the second time this week. He opted for a day off from on-field batting, and whatever work he did was shielded from onlookers other than stretching following the team meeting.
For now, Ohtani will continue to be listed for live batting practice on the daily schedule. It is up to him to decide when he is ready.
