Disgraced former SF Giants star gets embarrassed into deleting X account
Former SF Giants slugger and two-time World Series champion Aubrey Huff has run into problems with social media before. But it's probably never been as embarrassing as what happened Monday.
Since his baseball career ended, Huff has tried to reinvent himself as a conservative pundit and politician. Or, as his website describes him, he's a "2X World Series Champ, Proud Father, Loose Cannon, Patriot." Huff's specialty was "jokes" about kidnapping Iranian women, and teaching his sons to shoot guns out of fear that Bernie Sanders would be elected in 2020.
Twitter suspended Huff's account in 2021 for spreading disinformation about COVID-19, but he got it back after Elon Musk bought the site, now called "X", and restored suspended accounts.
This weekend, Huff decided to pick a fight with a 23-year-old right-wing internet personality named Isabella DeLuca, who has appeared on Newsmax and interned for Charlie Kirk's Turning Point USA. He waded into a beef between DeLuca and Rachel Wilson, aka "Rach4Patriarchy," who posts about how women shouldn't have the right to vote and that feminism is akin to witchcraft.
The DeLuca-Wilson feud revolved around criticism that DeLuca posted too many revealing photos. Somehow the argument was sparked by an allegedly "provocative" video from October where DeLuca baked a cake while fully-clothed. No, really!
Huff called the argument "proof that most today's women even know...their sexuality is all they bring to the table." Huff even tagged DeLuca, which backfired on him immediately when she posted a direct message she had from Huff on Christmas Day.
Huff sent DeLuca a direct message: "Hey beautiful let's Colab over cocktails and bad decisions." He also included an emoji that somehow made things grosser. After DeLuca posted the DM, Huff was so embarrassed that he deleted his entire account.
DeLuca was wrong about Huff's marital status - he and his ex-wife are now divorced, something Huff has tweeted about at length. While those pearls of wisdom are gone now, here's how Huff felt about divorce back in 2019.
"Divorce rates amongst athletes will continue to rise until the justice system is rightfully fixed...No way women who have never threw a touchdown pass, hit a game winning 3, or hit a 2-0 slider deserve half of a mans hard earned money just for having his babies.”
It doesn't look like Huff and DeLuca will "Colab" over cocktails anytime soon. To be honest, deleting social media is probably a healthy decision for Huff, considering that his inability to simply stop tweeting has gotten him disinvited from the Giants' reunions of their championship teams. His thousands of followers didn't help him in his blowout loss in a school board election last November.
The more access we have to Huff's unfiltered thoughts, the worse he looks. Politics aside, his judgment and critical thinking skills seem lacking. Why would you insult a person you creepily hit on a week earlier, and tag her so she's sure to see it? That's like a second baseman forgetting to cover second base on a double play ball!
Aubrey Huff was a hero for San Francisco following the 2010 season. He was one of the team's best position players in their run to the first World Series victory in SF Giants history. Yet rather than enjoying the spoils of his athletic career, he has decided to spend his post-playing days devolving into whatever this is.
So Huff is gone from X/Twitter again, and this time he can't blame liberals, Bernie Sanders, or vaccines. He has only himself - and his unrelenting misogyny - to blame.
