The SF Giants have sent right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb to Stockton to make a rehab start with the team's Single-A affiliate on Saturday. Giants manager Gabe Kapler told reporters during his pregame media availability on Saturday that the plan is for Cobb to throw 60-70 pitches across 4-5 innings pitched. Cobb is currently on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain last week and is eligible to be activated next week.

Cobb has arguably been the most underrated pitcher in MLB early this season, building off his excellent second half in 2022. Despite some recent struggles as he tried to pitch through his oblique injury, Cobb has a 3.09 ERA on the season with 76 strikeouts and just 21 walks in 78.2 innings pitched. Since Cobb was activated from the injured list on June 19th of last year, he ranks 10th in MLB among qualified pitchers in fWAR (4.3), 11th in ERA (3.07), sixth in FIP (3.02), and sixth in xFIP (3.14). However, Cobb allowed 13 earned runs over his last four starts before landing on the injured list.

Cobb will be the second veteran starter to make a start for San Jose this week. Ross Stripling made his third minor-league rehab appearance on Thursday, striking out 10 Single-A hitters across 4+ innings pitched. Cobb will look to do even better. The Giants have leaned on bullpen games in Cobb's absence, although starting pitching prospects Keaton Winn (Giants preseason #18 prospect), Tristan Beck (Giants preseason #19 prospect), and Sean Hjelle (Giants preseason #28 prospect) have excelled in prolonged outings during those games.

The SF Giants have done an excellent job withstanding a series of injuries during the month of June. However, the team could soon need some reinforcements. With Alex Cobb set to make a prolonged rehab appearance on Saturday night, it seems like manager Gabe Kapler could soon be welcoming one of his best starting pitchers back to the active roster.
