The SF Giants have assigned left-handed pitcher Alex Wood to Triple-A Sacramento to begin a rehab assignment, according to manager Gabe Kapler. Wood was placed on the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain on June 4th. He is eligible to be activated late next week. Wood had said that he did not expect to need more than the minimum 15 days to recover.

"Wood's going to pitch in Sacramento today," Kapler said. "He's on track to be activated soon after that. Obviously, nothing set in stone. There's no reason he can't pitch in a major league game the next time through if we think that's best for Alex and our team."

The Giants have been scrambling to fill their rotation since Wood was placed on the injured list. With Ross Stripling dealing with an injury of his own, San Francisco has been using two bullpen games each time through the rotation. When healthy, Wood is expected to return to his spot as the fourth starter in the team's rotation.

Wood has recorded a 4.80 ERA with 30 strikeouts and 16 walks in 30 innings pitched (eight appearances) this season with the Giants. ERA estimators xERA (4.37), FIP (4.57), and xFIP (4.90) all suggest that has been in line with his performance. Granted, he has dealt with multiple injuries this season and has already had two stints on the injured list.
