The SF Giants made a last-minute adjustment to their lineup on Friday night prior to their game against the Chicago Cubs. The Giants scratched third baseman J.D. Davis from the lineup with right hip tightness. Rookie infielder Casey Schmitt (Giants #3 prospect) was inserted into the lineup in Davis' place.

Perhaps overshadowed by LaMonte Wade Jr. and Thairo Estrada's breakout seasons, Davis is in the middle of a bounce-back season of his own. In 58 games this year, Davis is hitting .291/.373/.490 with 10 doubles, a triple, and nine home runs. He has also taken massive strides forward defensively at the hot corner. While the Giants expected young infielder David Villar to be their primary third baseman this season, Davis ultimately supplanted Villar at the top of the depth chart.

Schmitt has turned heads since he was called up to the majors in May. Granted, he has regressed at the plate after bursting onto the scene. In 104 big-league plate appearances, Schmitt is hitting .287/.298/.416 with seven doubles and two home runs.

Davis has not dealt with any major injuries this season, and while he has been sidelined in the past, he primarily dealt with hand and wrist injuries. Nevertheless, hip injuries remain one of the most dangerous for players in baseball. Hopefully, the move is just precautionary, and J.D. Davis will be back in the SF Giants lineup soon.
