SF Giants ace Logan Webb sets Opening Day strikeout record vs. Yankees
It did not take long for SF Giants ace Logan Webb to make history this season. The Giants' Opening Day starter, Webb, recorded 12 strikeouts in the first six innings pitched of his outing on Thursday afternoon against the New York Yankees, setting a new franchise record for strikeouts on Opening Day. The record was previously held by Madison Bumgarner, who struck out 11 on Opening Day back in 2017.
Webb, a Rocklin, California native, became the first pitcher to start consecutive season openers for the Giants since Bumgarner as well. Over the past couple of seasons, Webb has emerged as one of the best young starting pitchers in the majors. Last year, despite the Giants disappointing season, Webb recorded a 2.90 ERA in 192.1 innings and finished 11th in National League Cy Young award voting.
This offseason, Webb looked to continue building off his success, and was set to play with Team USA before deciding to forego the World Baseball Classic. Away from the diamond, he starred in a music video. Now, with the SF Giants season underway, Logan Webb is off to an excellent start.
