MLB Draft: SF Giants select JUCO RHP Josh Bostick with eighth-round pick
The SF Giants selected right-handed pitcher Josh Bostick out of Grayson Junior College (Texas) with their eighth-round (240th overall) pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. The slot value for the 240th selection is $198,800. Junior college prospects tend to have more leverage than players drafted out of four-year schools, so he will likely receive a six-figure bonus. Bostick is currently committed to UTSA.
Bostick was a two-way player in his first year of college ball but focused on pitching this season at Grayson and became one of the top pitchers in all of junior college. He struck out nearly two batters per inning pitched this season. At the Cape Cod League this summer, Bostick showed he could be effective against better competition as well. He recorded a 3.00 ERA across 18 innings pitched (four starts) with 21 strikeouts and nine walks.
Bostick has an athletic 6'4'' frame that should be strong enough to handle a starter's workload. Bostick features a low-90s fastball that has reached the upper 90s alongside a slider that has flashed plus potential and a developing changeup.
Bostick the tools to become a mid-rotation starter, and possibly even more, but remains very early in his development. He pitches almost entirely out of the stretch and has struggled with consistency on the mound, something to be expected from a player that was primarily a position player until recently.
The Giants are betting on their player development staff's ability to help Bostick find a repeatable delivery that helps him throw strikes. Granted, even if he is never able to locate his pitches well enough to stick in the rotation, he has a decent shot to be a backend reliever.
The Giants will have some time before their next selection, which will be the 270th overall pick (ninth round). We'll see who else joins the SF Giants 2023 MLB Draft class.
