MLB Draft: SF Giants select TCU RHP Ryan Vanderhei with 10th-round pick
The SF Giants selected right-handed pitcher Ryan Vanderhei with their 10th-round (300th overall) pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of Texas Christian University. The slot value for the 300th selection is $167,200, but Vanderhei is a senior who will likely sign for well below slot value.
Vanderhei was a highly-regarded prep prospect and was drafted in the 38th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks back in 2019. However, he opted to attend Kansas before transferring to TCU this spring. He struggled throughout his collegiate career.
Vanderhei started making noise last fall when he was flashing 96-98 mph alongside his hard slider. Once the season came around, though, his arsenal took a step back before an injury cut it short. Over his college career, Vanderhei has a 5.79 ERA with 151 strikeouts and 89 walks in 149.1 innings pitched (48 games).
Given Vanderhei's inconsistent stuff and command, he appears to be a likely candidate to shift to a one-inning bullpen role as a professional. If he can maintain upper-90s velocity with his fastball, his slider has shown enough to potentially be a solid two-pitch reliever in the major leagues.
The SF Giants will make no more selections on Day 2 of the draft and will round out their class with Rounds 11-20 tomorrow, on Day 3 of the 2023 MLB Draft.
