SF Giants promote first-round pick Bryce Eldridge to Single-A San Jose
The SF Giants have already assigned several members of the organization's 2023 draft class to Single-A San Jose to give them an opportunity to get a taste of full-season ball before the end of the season. Earlier this week, the Giants promoted first-round pick two-way player Bryce Eldridge to San Jose, becoming the first prep member of the team's class to play in full-season ball. Eldridge has already appeared in two games with San Jose, going 3-for-8 with a walk and two strikeouts.
Eldridge had several big highlights at the Arizona Complex League. During his stint in Rookie Ball, he hit .294/.393/.647 with three doubles, five home runs, nine walks, and 16 strikeouts in 61 plate appearances. While Eldridge struck out at a fairly high rate, it was an undeniably impressive showing from an 18-year-old facing professional competition for the first time.
The Giants drafted Eldridge with the 16th overall pick in the draft for his two-way prowess, but he will not begin pitching until next season. Most evaluators prefer Eldridge's long-term potential as a hitter, where he has true 70-grade power potential. At 6'7'', there is some concern about his ability to cover the zone, but scouts are optimistic that he can develop an average hit tool. Defensively, Eldridge only played first base and pitcher as an amateur, but the Giants began working with him on a move to the outfield following the selection, and he has shown some promise in right field.
On the mound, the righty has flashed a mid-90s sinker and a good feel for both a slider and changeup. His command still has significant room for improvement, as is the case for nearly all prep pitchers, but he has always been able to throw strikes consistently.
Bryce Eldridge is just the latest 2023 SF Giants draftee to join the San Jose Giants roster. He joins catcher Jack Payton (11th round), catcher Luke Shliger (sixth round), catcher Drew Cavanaugh (17th round), infielder Cole Foster (third round), infielder Quinn McDaniel (fifth round), third baseman Charlie Szykowny (ninth round), infielder Justin Wishkoski (16th round), outfielder Scott Bandura (seventh round), and right-handed pitcher Cale Lansville (14th round).
