The SF Giants have recalled versatile position player Brett Wisely (Giants #22 prospect). They did not need to make a corresponding roster move because MLB has allotted the team an extra roster spot for their two-game series against the San Diego Padres in Mexico City. With an off day on Thursday, the Giants passed on adding another pitcher to the staff.

The Giants traded outfielder prospect Tristan Peters to the Tampa Bay Rays Wisely last offseason. Wisely would have likely been selected in the Rule 5 Draft had he not been added to a 40-man roster. Rather than risking losing him for nothing, Tampa opted to trade him for another prospect. The Giants were high enough on his upside to add Wisely to the 40-man roster.

Wisely hit .274/.371/.461 with 15 home runs and 31 stolen bases at Double-A last season with the Rays. An above-average athlete, Wisely was also a versatile defender, appearing at first base, second base, third base, shortstop, and left field. The Giants, though, challenged him even more this spring, experimenting with him in center field. He took to it incredibly quickly and flashed enough potential in the outfield to make the Opening Day roster as a backup center field.

Wisely has appeared in 12 games with the Giants' Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento this season. He has been incredibly productive, hitting .304/.467/.500 with nine doubles, three stolen bases, and nearly as many walks (13) as strikeouts (14) in 63 plate appearances. He has also not recorded an error in five games in center field.

During his stints in the majors with the SF Giants, Brett Wisely recorded his first big-league hit on Friday but was just 1-for-14 with six strikeouts. It's unclear if he will remain with the team past the weekend. It's worth pointing out that right-handed pitcher Tristan Beck (Giants #19 prospect) seems like a candidate to be optioned instead of Wisely.
