Cal Quantrill Heads Back To IL, Guardians Roster Moves
Another Cleveland Guardians starter is headed to the injured list. This time for the second time this season.
Cal Quantrill went on the IL on May 31 with right shoulder inflammation and missed almost a month. Cal made his first start back on June 30 against the Chicago Cubs but only lasted 3.1 innings and allowed six earned runs.
His next start came against the Atlanta Braves on July 5 and Quantrill wouldn't fair much better against the best team in baseball. He gave up five earned runs, four of them coming in the first innings, and was shelled for 11 total hits.
Cal just hasn't looked the same this season as he has in the past. He's always been a weak contact pitcher who thrives off ground balls. However, his command has not been there allowing opposing teams to tee off against him.
His season ERA is now up to 6.45 over 13 starts as he looks to get healthy and help the Guardians in the second half of the season.
The team placed him on the 15-Day IL for the second time this season on July 6 with a right shoulder inflammation injury.
In the meantime, the team has recalled Cody Morris from Triple-A. The plan was for Morris to be a relief pitcher who can throw multiple innings and avoid having him start. However, the injury to Qauntrill and needing to limit the innings of the team's young arms may change that.
Morris has made two appearances this season and hasn't allowed a run while striking out three batters.
