Cal Quantrill Shares His Thoughts On MLB's New Pitch Clock
Fans may have noticed that the pace of play was quite a bit faster in the Cleveland Guardians' first Spring Training game. No, the teams weren't going for a new record for the quickest Spring Training game.
This was all a part of MLB's effort to speed up the game and limit the amount of time that pitchers and hitters have between pitches. It all has to do with the addition of a pitch clock.
Cal Qauntrill started for the Guardians against the Reds and was the first Cleveland pitcher to get in-game experience with the new rule and it seems that it didn't affect him as much as he thought it might.
After the outing he said:
"I think it'll be alright. I don't think it's quite as fast as I thought it'd be. I got going a little fast than I think the clock was. Seems like it's something that everybody wanted to try and we'll give it a go."
To be fair, Quantrill was never a pitcher who took a ton of time to get the ball out between pitches anyway. Obviously, it'll be quicker now but there are other pitchers around the league that will need to adapt more than him.
Cal finished off his first start of the Spring by going 1.1 innings giving up two hits, two earned runs, and striking out one batter. Not a terrible first outing for Quantrill who will be a part of the Guardians' rotation this season.
