Carrasco on Cruise Control as Indians Dominate Jays 6-0; Three Takeaways From the Win
The Indians offense took awhile on Tuesday, but finally it seemed got out of their shell, putting up six runs and getting another fantastic outing from Carlos Carrasco in a 6-0 win over the Jays.
The win puts the team at 18-14, and despite all month of May the team not scoring a lot of runs they find themselves in a spot where they can come home Friday with a road trip going 5-4 in nine games.
Carlos Carrasco was unstoppable again, going seven great innings, not allowing a run and striking out seven Jays. He moves to 4-2 on the year.
Here's our three takeaways on the big win, a win that puts the team in a spot with a win on Wednesday to win the series and get a much deserved day off before hosting the Minnesota Twins Friday at Progressive Field.
1. Cool Carlos
Carlos Carrasco has been the best starting pitcher on the roster this season thus far for the Indians, and he showed that again on Tuesday, throwing seven shutout innings not allowing a run with nine K's in the runaway 6-0 win.
His numbers do nothing but impress, as now sitting at 4-2 he lowers his ERA to 1.86, and Tuesday night he threw 97 pitches, 64 of which were strikes.
Carrasco's ERA on the road is 1.83, the second lowest road ERA in the big leagues this season, and teams are hitting just .179 against him when he takes the ball away from Progressive Field.
While his fastball was good again on Tuesday, his off-speed was even better, and it seemed most of his seven strikeouts came on his off-speed pitches.
On the road in 2017 thus far he's thrown 26.2 innings, striking out 27 batters to just three walks, and he's allowed only 15 hits as well.
With Corey Kluber on the shelf, Carrasco has taken over as the ace of the staff for now, and it's a welcome sight to Indians fans.
2. Gomes Getting Hot
The Indians catcher put the bat on the ball at the right time, golfing out a three-run homer to put the game away in the 8th inning to give the Tribe a commanding 6-0 lead.
In his last 14 games Gomes is hitting .378 with a homer, 4 RBI and three doubles. If there's a position on the team that the club could really use a boost it's the catcher spot, and having him get back to the form of two seasons ago would be a monster key.
The catcher on the season is now hitting .239, and if you consider two weeks ago today he was hitting just .182, it's a sight for sore eyes to see the catcher get going at the plate and raise his average in two weeks 57 points.
3. Another Chance to Win a Series
Wednesday the Indians will get a shot to win the series against the Jays, sending Danny Salazar to the mound for a 7:07pm first pitch.
The Tribe has dropped the first game of the last four series, but in all but one of those series they have rallied to win the last two games to win the series.
Now at 18-14 on the season, the team is 1.5 games up on the Twins for first in the AL Central, and for as bad it seems as the offense has been thus far in May, they have still found a way to win four of their first eight games of the month.
No one has seemed concerned about the lack of offense in May thus far, and once again Tuesday it seemed like the team was able to find a way to push runs across, scoring two in the second inning, and then while Carrasco dominated, the offense finally broke the game open with a run in the 7th and three in the 8th.
Six runs was the most runs the team has scored since the 12-4 win on April 30th. Since then, the team had not scored over three runs in one game, and in three of the eight games they scored just one run.
Let's see if they can win the series on Wednesday, get back to Progressive Field at 19-14, and maybe start to get a streak going as they host the Twins and Rays.
