Guardians Complete Trade With Cardinals
The Cleveland Guardians and St. Louis completed a trade on Friday afternoon that ended with one of Cleveland's prospects in a new uniform.
Cleveland sent INF/OF Richie Palacios to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
The Guardians were in a difficult position with Palacios. They designated the prospect for assignment on June 11 in order to bring Cody Morris off the 60-Day IL. Cleveland had to make a decision on the 40-man roster and Richie was the odd man out.
Palacios had spent all season at Triple-A Columbus where he had an OPS of .669 including 13 doubles and 30 RBI.
He made his MLB debut in 2022 with the Guardians and bounced between the Majors and Minors throughout the season. Richie ended up getting 112 Major League plate appearances and slashed .232/.293/.286 and drove in 10 RBI.
Palacios still has a ton of potential and is still only 26 years old. The Guardians have a surplus of prospects in both the outfield and infield so his path was always going to be difficult in the organization.
Upon being traded, Palacios has been assigned to the Memphis RedbirdsHopefully, he'll finally get another shot at the Big League level with the Cardinals.
