Guardians Drop Series With Marlins After Being Swept In Doubleheader
What a tough day of baseball down at Progressive Field. The Cleveland Guardians lost their series against the Miami Marlins after being swept in Saturday's doubleheader. This is now the second straight series the Guardians have dropped after they lost a doubleheader to the Detroit Tigers earlier in the week.
The story of the day was Cleveland's inability to get their offense going. The Guardians only managed to score three runs over the 18 innings played on Saturday which wasn't enough to even split the two games.
The Guardians only had 11 hits over the two games which tied the Marlins' hit total during the nightcap. The day was an overall struggle from the offensive side of the plate as no one seemed to be able to get anything going.
The one play that sums up the Guardians' offense came in the eighth inning of the second game with Oscar Gonzalez at the plate. He smoked a ball but it went right back to pitcher Dylan Floro who then doubled up Jose Ramirez at first after he was caught in no man's land.
Jose stood there with both hands on his helmet in disbelief.
Shane Bieber started the first game but continued his slow start to the season. He uncharacteristically walked four batters and also allowed three runs in 5.2 innings of work. Bieber has been hit pretty hard over his last three starts allowing eight total runs and eight walks.
Zach Plesac started the second game and actually pitched a solid. He did give up 10 hits and three runs, but his command was dependable as he struck out five batters and only walked two.
It's pretty clear that the offense needs to get it going to give themselves a chance to win. Especially with the starting rotation still dealing with injuries. They have a chance to salvage a game against the Marlins on Sunday afternoon before welcoming the Colorado Rockies into town on Monday.
