This season, the Cleveland Guardians had a trio of promising young pitchers cement themselves into the team’s starting rotation.

One of them, Tanner Bibee, was recently named to MLB Pipeline’s All-Rookie First Team.

In 2023, according to MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis, “Bibee was one of just eight big league pitchers to work 100 innings with a sub-3.00 ERA.”

After being promoted to Cleveland on April 26th, the 24-year-old made 25 starts in his first MLB season. Bibee went 10-4 with a 2.98 ERA, 141 strikeouts, and a 1.18 WHIP in 142.0 innings pitched.

He was the first American League rookie pitcher to record 10+ wins, 140+ strikeouts, and a sub-3.00 ERA in their debut season since the New York Yankees’ Masahiro Tanaka in 2014.

A fifth-round pick in 2021 out of Cal State Fullerton, he rapidly worked his way through Cleveland’s player development system.

Bibee began his professional career in 2022 with High-A Lake County, spending less than three months with the team. He went 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA, 86 strikeouts, and a 1.07 WHIP in 12 High-A starts.

Then, in 13 starts with Double-A Akron, Bibee went 6-1 with a 1.83 ERA, 81 strikeouts, a 0.88 WHIP, and a .194 opposing batting average. He was named the 2022 Eastern League Pitcher of the Year.

This year, Bibee began the season with Triple-A Columbus, spending less than a month with the team. In just three starts, he went 2-0 with a 1.76 ERA, 19 strikeouts, a 1.04 WHIP, and a .151 opposing batting average.

With his strong 2023 campaign in the books, the right-hander has proven to be a key piece of Cleveland’s pitching staff.
