Indians march on to 12 straight wins; three takeaways
CHICAGO-- While it wasn't the prettiest win during their streak, it was still a win.
The Cleveland Indians topped the Chicago White Sox, 5-3, on Labor Day afternoon, making it their 12th straight win.
Trevor Bauer recorded his 15th win of the year, while Cody Allen got his 24th save. It was also another standout day for the Tribe offense, as they outhit Chicago 10-6, and went three-for-nine with runners in scoring position.
Here are our three takeaways from the 12th straight victory.
1. Bauer's Outing
Trevor Bauer put in plenty of work this Labor Day, going six and one-third innings to get his 15th win of 2017.
He gave up just three hits, two earned runs and one walk on his way to a nine-strikeout performance.
The runs came as a result of a two-run homer Bauer gave up to Rymer Liriano in the bottom of the fifth inning.
When you look at the swinging strikes he threw, Bauer did a good job of getting the White Sox pitchers to chase his knuckle curve and changeup pitches out of the zone:
Bauer has now won a career-long eight straight decisions, (in nine total starts because of his no-decision against Colorado on Aug. 9) and even got a standing ovation when his afternoon was done from the Indians fans in attendance.
2. Ramirez keeps rolling
Jose Ramirez continued on the impressive streak he's been on as of late.
Ramirez hit a crucial solo-homer to right field in the eighth inning when the Tribe had just a one-run lead. Ramirez ended the day going one-of-three from the plate, but the importance of that hit can't be overstated as far as insurance runs go.
That home run was also Ramirez's 23rd of the season, and his 76th total extra-base hit. It was the fifth home run that Ramirez has hit on this 11-game road trip, and his third in two days.
It's almost comical that anyone questioned if he had lost his touch after the All-Star Break.
3. Twelve straight... and counting
The Tribe has now won their twelfth straight game. This streak is currently the longest of the season in all of Major League Baseball.
It's also the longest for the Indians since they set the club record for consecutive wins at 14, back from June 17-July 1 of last season.
The best part about this streak is that the team continues to click in nearly every aspect of the game.
The starters have posted a combined 1.51 ERA during this stretch, and they have now accounted for 11 of the 12 wins.
Offensively, the Indians continue to outmatch their opponents from the plate. During the streak they have outscored opponents 84-21, and have hit 32 doubles, four triples, and 23 home runs. They've also won the last 18 games in which they have scored first.
And more importantly, while they are all focused, they continue to stay loose and have fun. Whether they are adding to #MiniTeamCLE2017, or stealing Andre Knott's microphone, these guys are fun to watch, and having fun themselves. During the long grind that is the regular season, the importance of this cannot be overstated.
