Recently DFA’d Alfonso Rivas Claimed By Los Angeles Angels

Cleveland designated the 27-year-old first baseman/outfielder for assignment one week ago.

One week ago, first baseman/outfielder Alfonso Rivas was designated for assignment by the Cleveland Guardians to make room for catcher Austin Hedges on the team’s 40-man roster.

Since Rivas was designated for assignment, Cleveland had one week to either trade him or place him on waivers.

The Guardians ultimately chose the latter option for the 27-year-old.

On Friday, Cleveland announced that Rivas has been claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Angels.

This is now the fifth MLB organization that he has been a part of this calendar year.

After being designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs on December 23, 2022, he was eventually released by the team on January 5. Rivas then signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres six days later.

He was eventually dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 1 as part of the Ji Man Choi trade. Following the conclusion of the 2023 season, Rivas was claimed off waivers by the Guardians on November 2, and was placed on the team’s 40-man roster.

He played a combined 48 Major League games in 2023 with the Padres and Pirates, hitting .229 with 25 hits, 10 doubles, three home runs, 15 RBI, and a .725 OPS.

With Rivas now on the Angels, Cleveland now has just one primary first baseman on its 40-man roster: Josh Naylor. However, Deyvison De Los Santos, the Guardians’ selection in the Major League phase of the 2023 MLB Rule 5 Draft, has played 68 games at first base in his Minor League career.
