REPORT: Stephen Vogt To Interview For Guardians' Manager Position
22 days after their final game of 2023, the Cleveland Guardians are continuing their search for the team’s new manager.
Cleveland has considered a handful of candidates, both within and outside of their organization. However, one name has now been deemed a “serious candidate” for the position.
According to ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, Seattle Mariners bullpen and quality control coach Stephen Vogt, “is emerging as a serious candidate for the Cleveland Guardians managerial job.”
Per Passan, Vogt has also interviewed for the San Francisco Giants’ manager position. The Guardians and Giants are two of four teams seeking a new manager for next season.
According to Cleveland.com Guardians beat writer Paul Hoynes, Vogt will interview for Cleveland's manager position this week.
Vogt, who turns 39 years old on November 1st, just retired from his MLB playing career last year. In his 10 MLB seasons with six teams, primarily as a catcher, he hit .239 with 560 hits, 82 home runs, 313 RBI, and 121 doubles.
Vogt was named an AL All-Star in consecutive seasons with the Oakland Athletics in 2015 and 2016. He was originally a 12th-round pick in the 2007 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.
After retiring following the 2022 season, it did not take long for Vogt to get into the MLB coaching ranks. He was hired by the Mariners as a bullpen and quality control coach in January.
Despite this being his first career MLB coaching gig, he has already received managerial endorsements from multiple current Major League managers, including future Hall-of-Famer Bruce Bochy.
For the Guardians, whoever eventually replaces fellow future Hall-of-Famer Terry Francona as manager will become their 47th manager in franchise history.
