Three Guardians Named 2023 Rawlings Gold Glove Award Finalists
Rawlings announced their 2023 MLB Gold Glove Award finalists on Wednesday afternoon and it appears the Guardians have several contenders once more.
After winning four Gold Gloves a season ago, the Cleveland Guardians have three names on this season’s finalists list.
Second baseman Andrés Giménez, third baseman José Ramírez, and left fielder Steven Kwan were each named an American League finalist for their respective positions. Let's take a look at why each Guardian is a great candidate this year.
Andrés Giménez
This marks Giménez’s second consecutive season being named a Gold Glove finalist. Joining him as AL second baseman finalists are Mauricio Dubón of the Houston Astros, and Marcus Semien of the Texas Rangers.
Cleveland’s second baseman led MLB with 401 assists, and the American League with 23 defensive runs saved, per FanGraphs. He seeks his second straight Gold Glove.
José Ramírez
This marks Ramírez’s fifth time being named a Gold Glove finalist (also named in 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2022). Joining him as AL third baseman finalists are Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros, and Matt Chapman of the Toronto Blue Jays.
In his 11th MLB season, the 31-year-old put together a strong defensive campaign. Per FanGraphs, among AL third basemen, Ramírez finished fifth in innings played (1,105.0) and putouts (84), while ranking top-10 in assists (220) and double plays started (13). He seeks his first career Gold Glove.
Steven Kwan
This marks Kwan’s second straight year being named a Gold Glove finalist. Joining him as AL left fielder finalists are Austin Hays of the Baltimore Orioles, and Daulton Varsho of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Per FanGraphs, Kwan led MLB left fielders in total defensive runs saved (15), putouts (344), and innings played (1,352.0). He also led AL left fielders in assists (10). The 26-year-old seeks his second straight Gold Glove.
