Two Guardians Players React To New Managerial Hire
Since the Cleveland Guardians announced the hiring of Stephen Vogt as their new manager on Monday, there has been reaction from fans, former teammates, and media alike.
But what do current Cleveland players have to say about it?
In a recent article from Cleveland.com Guardians beat writer Paul Hoynes, a pair of Guardians players expressed their thoughts about Cleveland’s new managerial hire.
Utility infielder Tyler Freeman and right fielder Will Brennan are both optimistic and eager to work with Vogt.
As a 19-year-old, Freeman had a powerful moment with his new manager at extended spring training in 2018. This interaction has impacted him ever since.
“He was on second base and I was playing shortstop. He pulled me over and said, ‘Hey, it’s fun watching you play. Keep working hard.’ That has stuck with me my whole career. I tell people that all the time. Just from that little conversation I had with him when I was 19 years old. Now all of a sudden he’s going to be my manager. I’m super excited.”
Brennan echoed Freeman’s excitement and is looking forward to experiencing Vogt’s strong player rapport.
“It’s going to be a little different from Tito, but everyone is excited. We haven’t met Stephen except for playing against him in spring training. I heard he has a great reputation among players and other managers.”
Ultimately, Cleveland's right fielder believes that Vogt will fit well with the Guardians.
“I think it’s going to be a big step for us. He’s fresh out of the game from playing. He commands the respect of his teammates. I think he’s the perfect choice for us. He has that gritty mentality that we all have. I think it’s going to be a perfect fit.”
