Xzavion Curry Excels In MLB Season Debut As Guardians Shut Out Red Sox
The Cleveland Guardians opened their four-game road series against the Boston Red Sox with a 6-0 victory on Monday afternoon.
This latest win moves Cleveland to 8-2 on the road this season, which is currently tied for the best road record in MLB.
After he was activated from the 15-day injured list on Monday morning, Guardians right-handed pitcher Xzavion Curry had a strong and efficient performance in his MLB season debut. While the 25-year-old did not record a decision, he pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk, while throwing three strikeouts in 73 pitches (48 strikes).
Curry reflected on his performance after the game, expressing his pleasure with making his first Major League appearance of the year after missing the first two-plus weeks of the season.
“It felt great just to be back with the team, be back with the boys,” Curry said. “It’s not how I thought it would go [making his MLB season debut this late into April], but I never go against God’s plan. I’m always grateful for the position that He puts me in.”
Curry also discussed how he has been working on improving his slider, which he used to record his first two strikeouts in the contest.
“That’s the pitch that I’ve been throughout the Minors, throughout my career I’ve been trying to really hone in with,” Curry said. “I’ve seen that when that pitch is going, it can help me play off the other pitches. So to have that working today and to be able to locate that today, I feel like that really helped me in my outing.”
Up next, the Guardians will play the second game of their current road series against Boston on Tuesday night at 7:10 p.m.
