Miami Marlins Position Player Returns From Injury
The Miami Marlins benefitted from the return of one of their depth options at first baseman and designated hitter on Sunday.
The Marlins dropped to 4-7 during Spring Training after falling to the St. Louis Cardinals 12-8. It wasn't the offense that had a tough day on Sunday.
Troy Johnston made his return and was cleared to play all positions. He was in the lineup for the first time since injuring his ankle against the Philadelphia Phillies on March 1.
In his return from his nine-day recovery stint, he gave the Marlins the lead with a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning. On the day, he was 1-4, with the RBIs, a walk, and two strikeouts.
Johnston brings versatility to the Miami Marlins lineup. So far this spring, he played in left field and first base. He was Miami's designated hitter yesterday. In 2022, he played a few innings in centerfield.
Miami Marlins Head Manager Skip Schumaker discusses Johnston's ankle earlier this month explaining that the club would take it day by day.
"The healing process of a sprained ankle can take a long time," Schumaker said. "Every day is better, but determining live game action will be tough."
Other Miami Marlins injury news includes shortstop Xavier Edwards being day-to-day due to swelling in his foot. It's been reported that there's no expected structural damage. Some reports via social media say he was in a boot this weekend.
Edwards had 78 at-bats last season and hit for .295 on the year. He's 3-13 from the plate during Spring Training so far this offseason.
