Miami Marlins Star Gives Update On Return From Injury
The Miami Marlins have been without their best pitcher for too long.
The Marlins were able to land a playoff spot with their lead man on the mound sidelined at the end of the season.
Staff ace Sandy Alcantára spoke to the media about his return from Tommy John after he worked out for the first time with a baseball in months.
"Last night, I can't even sleep, thinking that I have to be here, be ready to throw," Alcantára said to media earlier this week. "Today was a great moment for me, throw a baseball for the first time since six months, so everything feels good. Hopefully, I've just got to keep doing everything I can to get ready and back as soon as I can. So I think I've just got to be patient and positive."
Alcantára was diagnosed with a forearm strain on September 6. After further inspection by the medical team, they discovered that it was a UCL sprain.
"So everything is different," Alcantára told media. "When I got the news that I had to do a surgery, my mind, my face, everything changed. But today, I've got that smile that I used to have before, and I feel good today, because I got the opportunity to be out there and throw for the first time, and everything feels good."
Alcantára will miss the 2024 MLB season.
Before his injury in 2023, Alcantára went 7-12 on the mound and had a 4.14 ERA. He led all Marlins pitchers with 184.2 innings pitched. The season before, Sandy won the National League Cy Young award after going 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA, leading all of baseball in complete games (6), shutouts (1), innings pitched (228.2), and batters faced (886).
