Betting Odds Indicate Mets Have a Chance for Shohei Ohtani
After a disappointing 2023 campaign, the New York Mets are looking ahead to the 2024 season. Owner Steve Cohen has made it known that if the team has a chance to get better, he's going to make that move.
While that didn't work for them after they made past moves for Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and others, that's not going to stop Cohen from going out and getting who he wants.
This year, the main prize is Shohei Ohtani.
There have been long rumors that the Mets could land the best player in baseball. The question wasn't going to be the money, but if Ohtani wanted to play in New York.
According to the latest Shohei Ohtani next-team odds, the Mets have the third-shortest odds to strike a deal with him. At +700, New York are behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.
Ohtani has been rumored to love the West Coast, which could be the deciding factor on the team he plays for next.
While the odds say that the Mets have a shot for Ohtani, Bob Nightengale doesn't believe that they think they have a chance to land the two-way superstar.
"The New York Mets have their eyes on Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, believing they have no realistic chance to land Ohtani."
It'll be interesting to see what they do in this situation. If Cohen believes Ohtani will play in New York, an offer will certainly be put his way. If Yamamoto is the consolation prize, the front office won't lose sleep.
