A major shakeup in the New York Mets' front office.

Billy Eppler has resigned as general manager of the Mets, as the team announced on Thursday afternoon.

This move comes as a major surprise, but with the Mets bringing in David Stearns as their new president of baseball operations, Eppler was no longer the main decision maker.

Eppler cited Stearns' presence as the reason for him stepping down as GM.

“I wanted David to have a clean slate and that meant me stepping down,” Eppler said in a statement. “I hope for nothing but the best for the entire Mets organization.”

Eppler was hired in November of 2021 and helped build a team that won 101 games and made a Wild Card appearance in 2022. But in his second and final season as GM, the Mets had the highest payroll of all-time before going on to win a disappointing 75 games and missed out on the postseason.

Eppler helped retool the Mets' farm system at this past trade deadline by dealing Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and others for a slew of top prospects.

“Billy Eppler led this team through a 101-win season and postseason berth last year and he will be missed,” Mets Owner, Chairman and CEO Steve Cohen said. “We accepted Billy’s resignation today as he decided it is in everyone’s best interest to fully hand over the leadership of Baseball Operations to David Stearns. On behalf of the Mets organization, we wish him all the best.”

With Eppler out, Stearns will now be in the market for his own GM.

The Mets are also in search of a new manager after firing Buck Showalter at the conclusion of the regular season.
