It has some legs.

According to SNY's Andy Martino, there is "building momentum" that David Stearns will become the next president of baseball operations for the New York Mets.

In a report from The Athletic, it was revealed that Stearns and Mets owner Steve Cohen are "down the road in talks." Stearns' contract with the Milwaukee Brewers is up after the season, but he has been allowed to talk with other teams since after the August 1 trade deadline.

Stearns, 38, is currently in a special advisor role with the Brewers after serving as their president of baseball operations from 2019-2022. He became their general manager in 2015 at the age of 30.

Under Stearns, the Brewers made the playoffs a franchise record four straight seasons from 2018-2021. They missed the postseason by one game in 2022, but are currently in first place in the National League Central.

Cohen has had his eye on Stearns for the president of baseball operations role for a number of years now, and he appears to be the top candidate to take over the job.

If Stearns comes in as president of baseball operations, Billy Eppler is expected to continue his role as general manager. Eppler and Stearns are said to have a close relationship, and should not have any issue working together.

The Mets path to hire Stearns is now clear, they're "down the road in talks," and there is "building momentum" that he will become the organization's next president of baseball operations.
