Could This New York Mets Trade Package Land Juan Soto?
One of the more surprising things that has emerged this offseason is Juan Soto could be made available by the San Diego Padres.
Despite representatives of the Padres saying that Soto will not be available this offseason, MLB insiders aren't so sure, considering the financial issues the franchise is in and that the superstar is hitting free agency following 2024.
The New York Mets, like just about everyone in the league, would be interested in acquiring the superstar outfielder if that's the case. Under the new leadership of David Stearns and Carlos Mendoza, pairing established stars Soto and Francisco Lindor with their young talent would be a great building block.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report put together a trade package that the Mets could offer San Diego.
He has them giving up outfielder Alex Ramírez and pitchers José Butto and Justin Jarvis to land the superstar.
Would that be enough to get the deal done?
Butto has Major League experience, Ramirez is New York's No. 11 prospect and Jarvis the No. 15 prospect.
At first glance, this doesn't feel like enough.
The Padres aren't just going to give away a generational talent even if he's set to hit free agency one year from now. They would much rather keep him for another season while trying to re-sign and risk him walking away for nothing, than getting a minimal return from a trade.
If the Mets really want to land Soto, they would probably have to offer those three players plus another high-end prospect or a couple lower-level ones to make San Diego think about making the deal.
There's a reason why blockbuster trades are rare.
Teams don't want to give up that type of talent very often and the Padres are in that camp right now.
New York could become aggressive and offer a mega-deal for the superstar, but they'd have to be prepared to give up a lot to get it done.
