The New York Mets are pursuing a powerful bat to add to the middle of the lineup.

New York let go former Mets slugger Daniel Vogelbach this offseason and now is looking to add a more consistent bat to the lineup. The Mets have been linked to multiple sluggers at this point in the offseason but haven't gotten a deal done.

This doesn't mean the club won't because they likely will. The free agent market just has been extremely slow this year. One player who has been floated as an option for New York and continues to be mentioned is former Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star J.D. Martinez, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"J.D. Martinez looks like a possible fit for the (Los Angeles Angels) and (Arizona Diamondbacks)," Heyman said. "He’d also make sense for the Mets. It’d be nice to finally have a legit middle-of-the-order guy to protect Pete Alonso. Keep hearing the (Chicago Cubs) will be after Alonso when he’s free."

Martinez joined the Dodgers ahead of the 2023 season and was very steady with 33 home runs and 103 RBIs. Although this is the case, he won't be returning to Los Angeles because it brought in two-way star Shohei Ohtani to fill the designated hitter spot.

The 36-year-old is a free agent and has been mentioned as a fit on numerous occasions this offseason along with fellow slugger Justin Turner. At this point, one of these two players likely will end up landing with New York it's just a matter of when.
