The New York Mets made a hard decision to let one of the best players in the history of the franchise walk in free agency but it appears to be the right move just months later.

The Mets notably refrained from going all-in on unequivocal ace Jacob deGrom this offseason, leading to the 34-year-old to sign a five-year, $185 million deal with the Texas Rangers.

The right-hander was placed on the 15-day injured list on April 29 with elbow pain and has since been moved to the 60-day injured list due to a much worse diagnosis than he was originally given.

"We have gone backwards," Texas Rangers general manager Chris Young told reporters Tuesday, per "Inside The Rangers" Matt Postins. "The MRI revealed damage that was significant."

After some brief optimism that deGrom could opt for an internal bracing procedure -- which would have a shorter recovery timeline -- it seems as though the team is set on a second Tommy John surgery for the oft-injured veteran.

The surgery will occur next week and not only end his season but potentially end his 2024 season before it starts as well. He'll have a chance to return in the second half next season but deGrom hasn't shown much ability to bounce back from injury.

deGrom was 2-0 with a 2.67 ERA, 45-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .176 batting average against and 0.76 WHIP in 30 1/3 innings across six starts before the injury.
