Ex-Mets Hurler Looking To Pitch Around All-Star Break; Could Reunion Make Sense?
Could the New York Mets add one more starter to the rotation?
New York made a specific effort to boost the rotation this offseason but is already having its depth being tested with ace Kodai Senga set to miss some time due to injury.
At this point, it wouldn't hurt to add a little more depth just in case other injuries pop up. Former Met Rich Hill is looking for his next opportunity but won't be able to return to the mound until the All-Star break, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman,
"In more of a summer baseball story, Rich Hill, who turns 44 next week, is hoping to pitch after the All-Star break," Heyman said. "If he pitches for one more team he’ll tie Edwin Jackson at 14 teams."
A reunion could make a lot of sense for the Mets. Hill is a 19-year veteran and has experience in New York and a career 4.01 ERA in 382 total appearances. The veteran hurler made 13 appearances with the Mets in 2021 and had a 3.84 ERA and 59-to-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 63 1/3 innings pitched.
Hill clearly wants to pitch and he could be an option to add some more veteran depth down the stretch. New York's rotation should be in a solid place if Senga doesn't miss a lot of time but it could never hurt to add a little more depth.
The 43-year-old certainly wouldn't cost much and a move could only help New York.
