Former World Series MVP Available; Mets Would Be Logical Landing Spot
The New York Mets' winter has been rather quiet despite coming off a fourth-place National League East finish last season.
The club has made moves to retool the rotation, along with adding depth to the bullpen but there is still much that needs to be done if the Mets plan on having a competitive 2024 season.
Adding productive bats this winter will be crucial for the Mets' rebound efforts and there's a coveted power hitter who the club is looking to acquire.
"Jorge Soler is seeking for a multi-year contract of at least three guaranteed years," Major League Baseball insider Héctor Gómez reported last Thursday. "The (Mets) are showing heavy interest in him, joining the (Boston Red Sox), (Toronto Blue Jays) (Arizona Diamondbacks) and (Miami Marlins) in the Soler sweepstakes."
Soler batted .250 with 60 extra-base hits including 36 home runs, 75 RBIs and a .853 OPS for the Marlins in 2023.
The 31-year-old has been a vital asset to his teams over the years -- helping the Chicago Cubs win the World Series in 2016 and earning World Series Most Valuable Player with the Atlanta Braves in 2021.
The Cuban slugger opted out of the final year of his three-year, $36 million contract with the Marlins -- passing on $13 million guaranteed to pursue a heftier contract in free agency.
The lineup for the Mets needs bolstering and Soler would be a monumental acquisition. Adding him to the lineup alongside Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor would surely make the Mets an intimidating team to pitch against.
Mets owner Steven Cohen has the capital to sign Soler and should spend the money to bring him in if he wants to see his club succeed in 2024.
