As expected, the New York Mets have had a fairly quiet offseason so far this winter.

Despite offering Yoshinobu Yamamoto a massive contract, he was reportedly the only player the Mets were willing to give a large, long-term deal to as they are planning for their future under new president of baseball operations, David Stearns.

His strategy is to have as much financial freedom possible when the monster contracts they shelled out in the past come off their books in 2025.

So, while this offseason has certainly been different for New York than what has occurred since Steve Cohen took over as owner, one insider doesn't expect that to be the case for long.

"The Mets are poised to do what the Dodgers did this winter by reaching deep into their wallets a year from now with $70 million in dead contracts to Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander and James McCann coming off their books," Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY writes.

That seems to be inline with how they are operating.

The Mets don't want long-term contracts this offseason that will limit them moving forward when they don't see themselves as contenders in 2024.

With all that money theoretically being freed up after this season, the front office can be much more aggressive in chasing players on the market to massively overhaul their roster like the Los Angeles Dodgers just did.

Next year's offseason certainly doesn't have the same alure as this one, because Shohei Ohtani isn't available, but there are still star players hitting the open market.

Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes, Zack Wheeler and Alex Bregman, just to name a few, are expected to be free agents.

New York could target major upgrades at certain positions to pair with some of their rising prospects who will get Major League experience under their belts this year.

So, with the Mets not being active in the Hot Stove this winter, that should heavily change next offseason and they could find themselves being the team that steals headlines.
