Mets, Blue Jays, Cubs Among Clubs Mentioned As Fit For Free Agent Superstar Slugger
The New York Mets could use another slugger in the middle of the lineup.
New York has had an interesting offseason. The Mets have improved the club without giving out a massive contract. New York is a better team on paper right now and should earn more wins in 2024.
While this is the case, New York needs to add another slugger. One player who has been floated as an option is former Chicago Cubs star Cody Bellinger.
A move still should be considered unlikely, though. Bellinger's price tag is sure to be massive and there is going to be plenty of competition for his services, including the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
"The (Los Angeles Angels), (San Francisco Giants), Mets, and (Seattle Mariners) all make sense as potential landing spots for Bellinger, but none of those clubs appear to be ready and/or willing to pay the asking price, which is believed to be north of $200 million," Feinsand said. "The Blue Jays have been considered by many to be a serious contender, and although Toronto re-signed Kevin Kiermaier to play center field, that shouldn’t stop the Jays from pursuing Bellinger, who can also play first base to give Vladimir Guerrero Jr. some days as the designated hitter.
"As is often the case, the price tag will be the determining factor. Then there are the Cubs, who must still be viewed as favorites to bring Bellinger back to the North Side. Chicago hasn’t done anything to this point to replace his bat in the lineup, but with few teams making an aggressive push for Bellinger, the Cubs front office has shown great restraint, not wanting to bid against itself to get Bellinger signed."
A move should be considered unlikely, but landing Bellinger would go a long way in improving the Mets.
