The New York Mets recently got some bad news involving one of their top prospects.

Mets No. 4 prospect Ronny Mauricio has been playing with the Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League so far this offseason. The 22-year-old has shined so far this offseason and in seven games has clubbed one home run, driven in four runs, and has slashed .433/.452/.667.

Although he has been impressive, New York got some bad news as Mauricio reportedly suffered a knee injury, according to SNY's Andy Martino.

"Mets infielder Ronny Mauricio is undergoing tests in the Dominican Republic for an injury suffered during a game Sunday, and will likely travel to New York in order to be examined by Mets doctors, according to a person familiar with the situation," Martino said. "It is a knee injury, the source said. The severity is not yet known. Playing on Sunday night for Tigres del Licey, Mauricio took off from first base as if to steal, stopped and then fell to the ground.

"Mauricio debuted last year for the Mets and hit .248 in 26 games with two home runs, and a .643 OPS. Those numbers did not fully represent the promise and athleticism that he showed. By the end of the season, the Mets’ outgoing leadership team slotted him ahead of Brett Baty and Mark Vientos as a potential third baseman of the future."

The young utility man made his big league debut with the Mets last season appearing in 26 games with New York. Over that stretch, he slashed .248/.296/.347 with two home runs and nine RBIs.

Mauricio is expected to play a larger role with the Mets next season depending on the severity of his knee injury.
