Should the Mets spend big to land the top available free agent bat this offseason?

The New York Mets need to shake things up.

New York already has made a major move this offseason with the hiring of former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns as the club's president of baseball operations. The Mets have plenty of other work to do this offseason after winning just 75 games in 2023.

While the starting rotation has led to the most headlines, there still is other work that could be done. The Mets could use a boost in the outfield and one player that could make sense is Chicago Cubs star Cody Bellinger. He has been linked to the Mets on multiple occasions and was again Wednesday by SNY's Anthony DiComo.

"There’s room for the club to take on a big bat, whether that’s (Shohei Ohtani) at (designated hitter) or perhaps a corner outfielder to guard against continued health issues for Starling Marte," DiComo said. "But will the Mets bog themselves down with a long-term deal for, say, Cody Bellinger, widely considered the next-best option after Ohtani? Or will they instead take a more muted approach and search for the next Bellinger -- a buy-low candidate who can offer big rewards if he hits? Offense clearly isn’t the Mets’ top priority heading into the winter, but it’s also not an area they can afford to ignore."

While Bellinger has been linked to the rival New York Yankees more, a move could make sense with the Mets. New York could afford Bellinger's asking price and pairing him with slugger Pete Alonso could be an intriguing dynamic in the middle of the lineup.

Bellinger returned to star form in 2023 and will likely land a deal approaching $200 million this offseason. At just 28 years old he could be the perfect person for the Mets to invest in. Plus, if the Mets were to land Bellinger they would be a torn in the Yankees' side.
