Mets Given Intriguing Odds To Land Young Superstar Yoshinobu Yamamoto
The New York Mets should find out in the not-so-distant future if they will land their top choice in free agency this offseason.
New York entered the offseason with a laundry list of roster holes it wants to fix. One of those spots certainly is the starting rotation. New York already has gotten started by landing former New York Yankees All-Star Luis Severino, but the Mets need to add more top-end talent.
The Mets -- like a good chunk of Major League Baseball teams -- are looking to land Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The 25-year-old is expected to be a true ace from day one and that's why he has had such a massive market in free agency. Plus, at just 25 years old he can help a club for the foreseeable future.
New York has the most money to spend and has been linked to Yamamoto on numerous occasions over the last year. Mets owner Steve Cohen and president of baseball operations David Stearns even both recently traveled to meet with him face-to-face.
It's unclear where he will land, but the Mets seem to be in a solid spot. The New York Post's Jon Heyman even gave the club third-best odds to land Yamamoto at 8-to-1.
"The deep-pocketed team from Queens could obviously blow away the field, and Yamamoto seems to be right up new baseball president David Stearns’ alley in that he’s that rare free-agent starter who’s only 25," Heyman said. "They obviously hit a home run with the Kodai Senga $75M deal, and Senga surely put in a good word. Odds: 8-1."
Heyman listed the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers as co-favorites to land Yamamoto at 2-to-1, but the Mets aren't far behind. There has been so much speculation and at one point seemingly every team was the favorite to land Yamamoto so take this information with a grain of salt. But, it is interesting.
