Mets Given Surprising Odds To Land Superstar Outfielder After Stellar Season
The New York Mets have some work to do this offseason.
New York had an underwhelming 2023 season and now is retooling for the 2024 campaign. The Mets are in hot pursuit of Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto and very well could land the young superstar soon.
The Mets have plenty of competition for Yamamoto's services but seem to be in a solid spot. There's one less team for the Mets to worry about as Yamamoto reportedly ruled out the San Francisco Giants as a possible landing spot.
Yamamoto certainly is New York's top choice in free agency, but if it were to miss out on him, the club could go in other directions to improve. There still are plenty of interesting options left in free agency including 2019 National League Most Valuable Player Cody Bellinger.
While a move may seem unlikely, New York has been given surprising odds to land the superstar by BetOnline and has the fifth-best odds to land the 28-year-old. The Toronto Blue Jays currently have the best odds to land Bellinger at +125 and the Mets currently sit at +1000.
New York's top choice certainly is Yamamoto and the club won't be making any other big moves until it finds out where he will be going. If Yamamoto were to choose another other than the Mets, Bellinger could be an intriguing backup option to help bolster the outfield and middle of the lineup.
It's still too early to tell and a move still should be considered unlikely, but there's no way to know.
