Mets 'Likely As Anyone' To Land Ex-Dodgers All-Star Slugger After Stellar Season
Could an All-Star be on his way to New York?
The New York Mets have had a quietly solid offseason but many have speculated that the team needs to add another slugger to the middle of the lineup. The designated hitter spot has been seen as an area of weakness and there are multiple players available who could help.
All-Star slugger J.D. Martinez has been mentioned as a fit on numerous occasions and the two sides even have discussed a deal recently although nothing has come to fruition to this point.
While this is the case, MLB Network's Jon Morosi certainly thinks there's a chance he ultimately ends up in New York.
"To me, the Mets are as likely as anyone else to sign J.D. Martinez," Morosi said. "I still look at the number of free agents out there, I would be stunned if the (Chicago Cubs) don't get one of them. And obviously (Cody Bellinger), (Matt Chapman), J.D. Martinez, and all Scott Boras clients.
"I look at J.D. and the Mets as being an excellent fit for two reasons. Number one, he helps them compete this year and I think the Mets have a goal of being competitive this year...I think the Mets are at least as likely as anyone else but I would keep the Cubs in that conversation."
Martinez would make a lot of sense for the Mets. He was an All-Star once again last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and clubbed 33 home runs to go along with 103 RBIs. He doesn't provide any defensive upside, but he could help the Mets out in a big way.
