Mets Reportedly Could Pursue Cy Young Winner Star This Offseason In Possible Blockbuster
The New York Mets have their work cut out for them.
New York had an extremely underwhelming season in 2023 and now needs to turn things around. The Mets appeared poised to compete for a World Series title in 2023 but failed to meet their goals. New York eventually traded away stars Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander and now needs to rebuild the starting rotation.
The Mets chose to spend big for proven players nearing the end of their careers and likely will go younger this offseason. One player who reportedly could be a trade target is Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes, according to SNY's Danny Abriano.
"No, the Mets should not be emptying their burgeoning farm system for Burnes or the pitcher who comes next on this list, but they won't have to," Abriano said. "Will it take something of serious value to pry Burnes away from the Brewers? Sure. But with just one year remaining before he hits free agency, the haul will not be huge.
"The biggest question here is whether the Brewers will actually dangle him. It can be argued that with Brandon Woodruff possibly being out for all of 2024 and Willy Adames set for free agency after the season that Milwaukee should retool. But will they?"
Burnes would be a solid trade target. He is 29 years old and already has three All-Star appearances and a National League Cy Young Award under his belt. The Mets built their farm system up this season and have the capital needed to get a deal done. It's unclear if Burnes will be moved, but he has been in trade rumors over the last year. Burnes will be a free agent at the end of the 2024 campaign and likely won't re-sign with the Brewers so he could be traded.
If the Mets could sign Burnes to a long-term extension, it makes sense to bring him in. If New York could land him along with another top arm -- like Yamamoto -- maybe it could get back to the postseason in 2024.
