Mets Reportedly Have Made Decision On Whether They Will Pursue Juan Soto
The New York Mets will undergo some changes this winter but will one of those moves involve the addition of one of the brightest young stars in Major League Baseball?
After a tumultuous 2023 season in which the Mets missed the playoffs by a long shot despite having the highest payroll in Major League Baseball, the organization will need to make significant roster moves this offseason.
Mets owner Steven Cohen will be looking to spend big money this winter in order to retool the roster but not all top stars on the market would be a good fit for New York.
"(Juan Soto) does not fit because the Mets are not a Juan Soto away from winning the National League East in 2024," SNY's Andy Martino posted on X when responding to a question about whether the Mets would pursue the star outfielder. "Not the right time to sell the farm. So, no."
Soto hit .275 with 68 extra-base hits including 35 home runs, 109 RBIs and a .930 OPS (158 OPS+) in 162 games for the Padres last season.
The addition of Soto to the Mets' lineup would be a monumental move but it logistically wouldn't make sense when considering the dynamics of the situation.
The 25-year-old slugger is entering his final year of arbitration and would cost the Mets a plethora of top prospects if they were to trade for him. To forfeit the future of the organization and spend an estimated $27 million -- according to Spotrac -- for one player would be a poor investment.
The Mets need to be focusing on retooling their decimated pitching staff after losing Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer at last year's trade deadline. Adding Soto to the lineup will not solve New York's 2023 shortcomings.
