Mets Reportedly Make Surprise Move; Place Veteran Pitcher On Waivers After Rough Season
The New York Mets made a surprise move Tuesday night.
New York reportedly placed veteran starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco on waivers, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
"Other players currently on waivers, per sources: Yankees OF Harrison Bader, Mets RHP Carlos Carrasco, White Sox RHP Mike Clevinger, Tigers RP José Cisnero," Rosenthal said. "Claims awarded in reverse order of winning percentage as of Thursday. Teams on fringes of wild-card race likely to be most aggressive claimers."
Carrasco joined the Mets ahead of the 2021 season in a trade from the Cleveland Guardians centered around star shortstop Francisco Lindor. The 36-year-old's stint in New York was a roller coaster, to say the least. Carrasco appeared in just 12 games for the Mets in 2021 and compiled a 6.04 ERA.
The righty bounced back in 2022 and was an important piece of the Mets' starting rotation. Carrasco compiled a 15-7 record to go along with a solid 3.97 ERA in 29 starts. The 36-year-old has struggled in a major way this season for New York and in 20 starts has pitched to a 6.80 ERA.
Other clubs now will have the opportunity to place a waiver claim on Carrasco. If a contender were to claim the righty, he would be eligible to join a postseason roster. At this point, it wouldn't be too surprising to see a club take a chance on the righty. The majority of contenders could use another depth arm and now Carrasco reportedly is available to whoever is interested.
