Mets Reportedly Will Discuss Contract Extension With Homegrown Superstar This Winter
The New York Mets have a very intriguing offseason ahead of them.
New York won 101 games in 2022 but didn't live up to expectations in 2023. Although this is the case, there should be some hope that the club could get back to a successful level this offseason with a few solid moves.
The Mets will be looking to add to the roster this offseason but one major decision they will have to make actually involves someone already on the roster. Will superstar slugger Pete Alonso remain with the club for the foreseeable future? This is the biggest question facing the club right now. Alonso will be a free agent at the end of the 2024 season. There already has been trade interest in him and if the two sides can't come to terms on a contract extension, he may be moved.
It's unclear what will happen, but the club unsurprisingly will discuss an extension with Alonso this offseason, according to SNY's Danny Abriano.
Per MLB Network:
"David Stearns just said the Mets will have discussions with Pete Alonso this offseason about an extension," Abriano said. "'I’d like to have those conversations behind closed doors,” (president of baseball operations David Stearns) said as transcribed by Abriano. “I think they’re most productive that way.'"
It isn't surprising that the Mets will discuss a new contract with Alonso but it's unclear if the two sides will agree to terms. Stearns has said all of the right things so far about Alonso's future with the club, but everything is in flux until he signs on the dotted line.
Update:
According to Alonso's agent Scott Boras, he and Stearns met "at length" on Tuesday. Boras made it clear that Alonso is opening to listen to extension talks.
