Mets Seen As Landing Spot For Former Most Valuable Player In Possible Surprise Move
The New York Mets haven't made a massive signing yet this offseason but could that change soon?
New York has been much more strategic with its spending this offseason and hasn't made a massive investment but has improved the club. The Mets are in a better spot right now and could surprise some people in 2024.
If the Mets were to make a major splash this offseason, adding a slugger in the middle of the lineup would be a logical idea.
The free agent market has moved extremely slowly this offseason and one of the top offensive free agents still is available in former Chicago Cubs star Cody Bellinger. He is looking for a massive deal, but if his price drops, the Mets are viewed as a potential landing spot, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
"A number of teams would benefit from the addition of Bellinger, the 2019 (National League) Most Valuable Player who won Comeback Player of the Year honors last season after posting strong numbers for the Cubs," Feinsand said.
"The (Los Angeles Angels), (San Francisco Giants), Mets, and (Seattle Mariners) all make sense as potential landing spots for Bellinger, but none of those clubs appear to be ready and/or willing to pay the asking price, which is believed to be north of $200 million."
This doesn't necessarily mean that a move is imminent, but it is interesting that the Mets are being mentioned in the same conversation as Bellinger. New York could use a slugger of his caliber and he's just 28 years old. A move may be unlikely, but it could make some sense.
