Mets Sign Promising Reliever to Minor League Deal
Big names will be connected with the New York Mets throughout free agency with Steve Cohen now the owner of the team. He's shown that he's not shy about spending money since taking over and will spend for the right guys.
However, there are still other holes on the roster that many of the high-profile players can't address.
Their bullpen has major questions following the departure of four relievers this offseason.
The Mets announced they signed Cole Sulser to a minor league contract according to MLB Trade Rumors, with the chance that he could eventually work his way onto their Major League roster.
He was originally drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in 2013 before being sent to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018 as part of a three-team deal that landed the Guardians Carlos Santana.
Sulser made his Major League debut in 2019 with the Rays, recording an ERA of 0.00 across seven appearances.
Despite that, he was designated for assignment to make room for Yandy Diaz and was claimed by the Baltimore Orioles.
The right-hander struggled during the COVID-shortened 2020 season but had his best year in 2021, posting an ERA of 2.70 across 60 appearances.
He was traded by the Orioles to the Miami Marlins where he struggled in 2022 with an ERA of 5.29. They designated him for assignment where he was once again claimed by another team.
However, a right shoulder strain caused him to play only four games for the Arizona Diamondbacks and he was DFA'd again, returning to Tampa Bay.
After Sulser elected free agency in November of 2023, New York signed him to the minor league contract.
The 33-year-old is only two seasons removed from being a solid piece for Baltimore and if he can find that form with the Mets, he could factor into their bullpen equation during 2024 with so many questions surrounding that unit.
