Mets Star Prospect Could Make Opening Day Roster
With the New York Mets completely out of the playoff picture, it's given the team some freedom to call up their young prospects and see what they can do at the Major League level.
The organization is looking supplement their roster with youth, while also having the ability to spend for high profile free agents.
It's something the Los Angeles Dodgers have done, which is exactly who the Mets want to model their franchise after with the hiring of executive David Stearns.
One of their top prospects is making his case to be on the Opening Day roster in 2024.
New York's No. 4 prospect Ronny Mauricio has lived up to the hype since being called up on Sept. 1 from their Triple-A affiliate. In 10 games with the Mets, the infielder has a slash line of .306/.342/.444 with one home run and five RBI.
Anthony DiComo of MLB.com writes, "The year began with a hot spring for Mauricio, who nonetheless had to wait until September to earn his first call-up. When he did, he immediately made the most of his opportunity, smoking a 117.3 mph double in his first plate appearance and hitting safely in eight of his first 10 games. Next spring, Mauricio should be on the inside of the Mets’ roster bubble."
Where he fits into the puzzle defensively will be the question that New York needs to answer. He can play across multiple infield positions, which helps his case. Mauricio could play at third base or second base, depending on the needs of the team.
This is the exact type of predicament that the Mets wanted to be in. Having talented prospects show that they can play at the Major League level alongside their star players Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso.
With what Mauricio has shown so far in his young career, he's making a major case to be included on the 2024 Opening Day roster.
