The New York Mets have a very important decision to make.

What does the future hold for star first baseman Pete Alonso? It's very unclear. Alonso is in line for a contract extension this offseason but trade rumors already have been flowing. Teams showed interest ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline, but ultimately he remained with the club. While new president of baseball operations David Stearns has claimed Alonso will be the club's starting first baseman in 2024, that may not actually end up being the case, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.

"Teams fully expect that Mets All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso will be made available this winter, particularly after Alonso switched agencies to Scott Boras," Nightengale said. "Boras historically has kept his clients from signing an extension when close to free agency. Alonso is expected to earn $22 million in his final year of arbitration, according to MLB Trade Rumors’ projections."

Alonso could bring in a king's ransom if the Mets actually opted to trade him, but it would also be devastating to Mets fans. The three-time All-Star not only is one of the best sluggers in baseball but also a homegrown fan favorite. Maybe these rumors are a sign that both sides are trying to gain leverage in contract talks or maybe Alonso actually could be dealt away. Ultimately we will find out in the not-so-distant future as the MLB hot stove starts to pick up steam.
